2021 - CNC Machine Tool Retrofitting for Automotive Parts Supplier

Project Overview

In 2021, a Tier-2 automotive parts supplier in Dongguan commissioned a full axis retrofit of an aging Vertical Machining Center. The goal was to restore positioning accuracy and extend machine life without replacing the entire frame.

Implementation

Our team replaced the original plain-bearing ways with preloaded linear guide rails and precision ground ball screws on X, Y, and Z axes. The open-loop stepper drives were upgraded to closed-loop AC servo motors with 17-bit encoders, matched to planetary reducers on the Z-axis.

Results

• Positioning repeatability improved from ±0.02 mm to ±0.005 mm
• Surface finish (Ra) improved by 35%
• Reduced scrap rate by 18% over the first 12 months
