2023 - Robotic Welding System for EV Battery Trays

Project Overview

In 2023, an EV battery pack integrator needed a 6-meter gantry welding robot with high dynamic stiffness and smooth path tracking for aluminum battery tray welding.

Implementation

Hardened helical rack-and-pinion drives were installed on the X-axis for high-speed long travel. Planetary reducers with backlash < 3 arc-min were matched to servo motors on the Y and Z axes for precise torch positioning.

Results

• Travel speed up to 120 m/min with 1.5 m/s² acceleration
• Weld seam repeatability ±0.1 mm
• System uptime improved to 96%
